Is BizTalk Server End of Life, or Just End of Support?

by Jo Wood

BizTalk Server is not being switched off, but it has reached the end of its product lifecycle.  Microsoft has confirmed that BizTalk Server 2020 is the final release. There will be:

  • No new versions
  • No new features
  • No future product roadmap

While support continues for a limited time, BizTalk has effectively reached end of life from a product investment perspective. Microsoft’s integration strategy has now fully shifted to Azure-based integration services.

When Does BizTalk 2020 Support End?

BizTalk support ends in two stages:

  • Mainstream support ends in 2028
  • Extended support ends in 2030

After extended support ends, BizTalk Server will no longer receive:

  • Security updates
  • Bug fixes
  • Official Microsoft support

Although 2030 may feel distant, organisations should understand that extended support does not eliminate risk. As platforms age, security exposure, operational fragility, and compliance concerns tend to increase, not decrease.

Can You Continue Using BizTalk After End of Support?

Technically, yes.  BizTalk can continue running after support ends.

However, from a business and risk standpoint, doing so introduces serious challenges:

  • No security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities
  • Increased audit and compliance risk
  • Reliance on unsupported infrastructure
  • Declining availability of BizTalk skills
  • Higher cost of emergency remediation

For organisations with critical integrations, these risks often outweigh the perceived benefit of delaying migration.

Why Is Microsoft Encouraging BizTalk Customers to Move to Azure?

Microsoft’s long-term integration strategy is now cloud-native, modular, composable and event-driven.

Rather than replacing BizTalk with a single product, Microsoft has invested in Azure Integration Services, a set of managed services designed to deliver:

  • Elastic scalability
  • Built-in resilience
  • Reduced operational overhead
  • Faster change and innovation

What Replaces BizTalk?

There is no single, like-for-like replacement for BizTalk Server and that is by design.

BizTalk capabilities are instead delivered through the suite that is Azure Integration Services, including:

  • Azure Logic Apps for workflow orchestration
  • Azure Service Bus for messaging and decoupling
  • Azure API Management for API-led integration
  • Azure Functions for custom processing
  • Event Grid for event-driven architectures
  • Azure Monitor and Application Insights for observability

This shift enables more scalable, resilient, and flexible integration architectures, but it also means migration must be designed in the new environment, not lifted and shifted.

Logic Apps vs BizTalk: What’s the Difference?

A frequent question is “Logic Apps vs BizTalk — which is better?”

The reality is that they address integration challenges in very different ways:

  • BizTalk is a monolithic, server-based integration platform
  • Logic Apps is part of a cloud-native, distributed integration ecosystem

Key differences include:

  • Subscription-based pricing versus larger initial outlay
  • Elastic scale versus fixed capacity
  • Native Azure security and governance
  • Faster deployment and change cycles

What Are the Risks of Staying on BizTalk Too Long?

Many organisations choose to delay migration because BizTalk is stable and still works, plus this gives time to plan investment for migration to Azure by 2028/2030.

  • Growing security exposure
  • Increased compliance and audit pressure
  • Reduced resilience during incidents
  • Rising infrastructure and support costs
  • Limited ability to integrate with modern cloud platforms

How Do You Migrate from BizTalk to Azure?

A successful BizTalk to Azure migration is not a like-for-like rebuild.   Though at Affinus we have developed automated tools to accelerate this process.

Affinus have a highly effective migration process:

  1. Discovery and full assessment of the existing BizTalk estate and the business needs and objectives.
  2. Rationalisation of unused or low-value integrations.
  3. Target architecture aligned to Azure best practices, utilising the Microsoft Azure stack
  4. Phased migration with hybrid coexistence where required
  5. Incremental modernisation
  6. Rigorous testing at every stage
  7. Our standardised development patterns, coupled with training, empowers your internal teams to manage the new Microsoft ecosystem.

This approach reduces risk while delivering measurable value early.

How Long Does a BizTalk Migration Take?

There is no universal timeline.

Migration duration depends on:

  • Number and complexity of orchestrations
  • Number of maps, pipelines, and custom components
  • Adapter usage and trading partner integrations
  • Non-functional requirements such as security and throughput

How Much Does It Cost to Migrate from BizTalk to Azure?

We ensure that every migration is unique to fit your business and integration needs, so the cost is dependent on a number of factors.

Commercial awareness is one of our key strengths, we are always focused on reducing and managing costs and complexity.

Affinus AIS landing zone offers a fixed element to your migration and integration projects, whilst simplifying and de-duplicating AID resources.  Our landing zone has been built with the deep knowledge gained from years of experience in integration, from the inception of BizTalk to the latest Azure road map.  Affinus’ close relationship with Microsoft, means we are always a step ahead.

Where Should We Start?

The right starting point is understanding your current integration landscape, how well it is working for you and your business needs, not selecting tools!

A clear BizTalk migration assessment and strategy should answer:

  • Which integrations are business-critical?
  • What should move first and why?
  • Where does modernisation deliver the most value?
  • How do we maintain stability and security throughout the transition?

This is where experienced Microsoft integration specialists make the greatest difference, ensuring migration is secure, scalable, and designed for the future to meet and enhance the needs and objectives of your unique business.

Planning Your Next Step

Microsoft’s BizTalk announcement does not require immediate action — but it does require intentional planning for the next two to four years.

Organisations that plan early gain:

  • Greater control over timelines
  • Lower migration risk
  • Stronger architectural outcomes
  • Better alignment with Microsoft’s Azure roadmap

Better integration isn’t just about moving platforms — it’s about designing what comes next with confidence.
